چکیده

Approaches to restore productivity eroded soils are urgently needed sustain food security. We evaluated plant response soil-landscape rehabilitation, in which approximately 15 cm of topsoil was moved from depositional landscape positions the upper slope. Crop monitored for 6 yr a corn (Zea mays L.)–soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] rotation at severely site and 4 wheat (Triticum aestivum moderately site. Experiments were conducted years with relatively wet springs droughty summers. In landscape, addition soil increased crop biomass by 25–95% on kg ha–1 basis grain yields 20–49% (corn) 12–59% (soybean), largest yield increases recorded most positions. Soil protein test weight. No significant differences observed emergence rate or stand establishment. significantly biomass, but not yield. both landscapes, lower areas removal than adjacent no removed, is likely least partially an artifact plot design. While more research evaluate long-term impacts, results these studies show that rehabilitation may help alleviate effects past erosion provide immediate benefits soils.

On the fractality of eroded coastlines of correlated landscapes

We investigate through numerical simulations of a simple sea-coast mechanical erosion model, the effect of spatial long-range correlations in the lithology of coastal landscapes on the fractal behavior of the corresponding coastlines. In the model, the resistance of a coast section to erosion depends on the local lithology configuration as well as on the number of neighboring sea sides. For wea...

Polley: Crop Responses to Global Change

agriculture is to feed the world’s burgeoning population, yields of water-limited crops must be improved substanYield of water-limited crops is determined by crop water use and tially. Efforts to accomplish this have concentrated on by plant water use efficiency, each of which will be affected by the anticipated rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration increasing the fraction of a...

Crop Responses to Elevated Carbon Dioxide

Atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration has increased from 280 ppm (parts per million, mole fraction basis) in preindustrial times to 370 ppm today. As concentrations of CO2 and other greenhouse gases rise, global temperature is anticipated to increase. Elevated CO2 will improve crop yields due to increased photosynthesis. However, at above-optimum temperatures for reproductive growth pr...

Crop Models – Within Controlled Environment

Technology used in controlled environment facilities ranges from simple plastic row covers to sophisticated controlled and automated greenhouse and growth chambers. Crop models that estimate plant responses to climactic, nutritional, and other factors have been used to support controlled environment plant production at many of these technology levels. Such models typically consist of mathematic...

Multiple pathways of commodity crop expansion in tropical forest landscapes

Commodity crop expansion, for both global and domestic urban markets, follows multiple land change pathways entailing direct and indirect deforestation, and results in various social and environmental impacts. Here we compare six published case studies of rapid commodity crop expansion within forested tropical regions. Across cases, between 1.7% and 89.5% of new commodity cropland was sourced f...
